Showing signature entrepreneurial flair, Meghan MacCallum (also one of the personalities who brought us Jack Black Beer) has launched her own jewelry line. We were looking for a new face for this first campaign and after an intensive casting process we found Jess. Although the idea for the shoot was quite simple, we we trying to avoid overused locations (Bakoven rocks seems like the rite of passage to any beach photo shoots in Cape Town). Slightly surreal moment during the shoot when a massive bulldozer kept on creeping past our location. And then model made friends with the bulldozer driver. “What a big machine you have.” Shoestring productions made this beautiful behind the scenes video of the shoot.

Cosmo Lingerie 2011

Upper East side. Humming. Models. Models agencies. People in model agency circles. Magazine people. People you know or should know or kind of heard of know who know through that shoot you did with the hot/bitchy/skinny/x/related model/make-up artist/stylist and the fashion editor and the guy with the yellow shoes cruising the bar. Not entirely sure where to fit into the room. Flash mobbed by men wearing cravats. “Andrew how are you?!!” The PR guy who invited me is cool. Legs and lingerie emerging from the smoke pit with umbrella’s to shield them from the purple rain of plastic snow. Flashes going paraplegic.

The Rose

Photography and Motion Picture (films) have a close but tense relationship. Like bickering brothers. Sure people think that because you’re already a lens person so you can switch between mediums easily. But this is not true. Photographers often get film horribly wrong. A film scene may be intensely art-directed and meticulously framed but they often lack that sticky stuff which binds reel to reel and audience to screen: a proper story. The model might be hot but she’s not acting, she’s been sexy up a tree trunk. There’s a big difference between tugging emotional strings and filming a fashion editorial cut to The XX. Karl Lagerfeld’s recent foray into short film could be the best examples of anemic plots featuring over-indulged models trying to be Hollywood (Not many people know Lagerfeld is also a photographer and shoots campaigns for both Chanel and Fendi).

So when I first decided to dip my toes in that vast pool of moving stills (you see, ever the photographer first), I followed a road laid by some proven photographer-directors who’s style I admire: the Aveillan’s and Darlings of this world. Bruno Aveillan because of the sensual dousing of motion and metaphor in ads for Louis Vuitton and Lanvin. And Jeffery Darling because of his gift for these wandering snapshot montages. Just take a look at the work he’s done for Diners Club.

Back to The Rose. When I started writing it, I told myself just to treat it as an experiment. And now it’s ended up as something I really enjoy. I try to see it as a crossover between the eye-meltingly sensual language of the classic french perfume piece (see ads like Slip Into / Oxygen) mixed with a Parisian charm and mystery you find in french films like Amélie.

Well Suited for Wanted

Wanted magazine is Business Day’s lifestyle supplement. It’s a hugely successful local luxury market magazine modeled in some ways after the London based Financial Times’ ‘How to Spend it’. It’s filled with insightful, witty, premium lifestyle journalism.

In each of my fashion shoots I aim to do something very new and dramatic whether it’s shooting underwater (take a look at the Beauty & Water shoot) or something very edgy and fashion forward like ‘Man Made Moon’. For this shoot I wanted it to be bold but almost more commercial, which means shooting in a style that could actually resemble a final ad campaign for one of brands. I chose a story that explored the relationship between architecture and the structure and design of men’s formal wear. I was playing with ideas around a famous Coco Chanel quote, “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.” My aim was to interpret these ideas visually through uses of dramatic lighting, hard shadows, strong lines, perspectives and silhouettes while always keeping the focus on the quality and tailoring of the garments themselves.

Some of the brands we shot included Fabiani, Daniele Alessandrini (available at Speagetti Mafia), Paul Smith, Viyella, Tiger of Sweden (available at Melrose Arch), Louis Vuitton (which we flew in from Paris as few days before the shoot), Hugo Hugo Boss, Boss Hugo Boss, Trenery, C2 and Burberry (also flown in from London).

I’ve created a Monster

I spend way too much time collecting images. Filling up an expanding menagerie of inspiration folders and notebooks. Hoarding tearsheets. Rivers of data flow into little iMac buckets overflowing with beautiful things. Clothes, models, scenes, designs, stories, objects, lighting, art, studios, textures, drawings, behind the scenes, scratches of ideas. Its time to share some of what I’ve discovered so I’ve created a hungry Tumblr monster which I’m constantly feeding with this photo fodder. There are no credits and no links, just photographs to make your eyes water. Cut & Color

After returning from Beunos Aires, I was determined to dive into themes from my own country and heritage. Part of that goal is to try and be less afraid of working with bright African colors since I have a tendency to keep photographs very subdued and under-saturated. I had this simple idea in the back of my head for a few month and after meeting and working with the model, Patrica, on a Bree Street pilot shoot we did with Woolworths, I thought she would be great to help me work this.

Cascades

Last week I was asked by Cascades to shoot Black and White images for 8 Prints in their new Sea Point Hotel. The brief was to shoot something very sensual within the boutique Hotel’s 8 rooms. Each room will hang a Print that was actually shot in that room. I was also asked not to use ‘skinny teenagers’ as models, but more models that the hotel guests could relate too. We decided on using a very simple theme of a Hotel guest getting prepared for her day. And also shots of her preparing or returning from a dinner party. We then just focused on small intimate moments we could capture out of that routine. I used a combination of flash and reflected natural light to get some very hard punchy contrasts on some images mixed with some very soft naturally lighted elements on others. Here are some selected images from the shoot. We are still deciding on the final 8 prints.
