A few months ago we were traveling in Zanzibar. By pure chance one afternoon we hired a dhow and spent the evening parked off the coast, diving into that incredible blue water and drinking Safari beers with some new friends we made on the island. It’s difficult to describe how incredible those few hours were. I’ve done a very loose cut of the footage I took just to try and tell the story.

I’ve got some more shots of Zanzibar here.

A short film about experiencing Kenya.

This is a short film about my first experiences of Kenya.

As my first time traveling in East Africa, I’ve been completely blown away by this place. Kenya has been inhabited by people for as long as human history has existed, creating a country of hugely rich cultures, languages and interwoven histories. The scenes I filmed are meant to convey a mood of being immersed in a place for first time. To give a sense of what it’s like to be a traveller. Open to discovery.

This was filmed while on a campaign shoot I’m currently working on with Dean Oelschig, @DeanOelsch , the creative director of Halo. I also uploaded the video on youTube in case vimeo is not working.

I’m still working out why I like this video so much. I was busy with a post about war photography when I discovered it. Dabbing in some of my favourite visual themes; flags, war machinery, grainy stock footage of Russian battles, generals with stared medals, Russian Fonts, youth, bravery, national symbolism, military precision, red and yellows. The lingering irony of the Verdi soundtrack undermines the actual intent of a romantic depiction of victory and war (and the fact that there was a ‘horrors of war’ video posted right next to this one on YouTube). I could easily see these reels as prelude to a Quentin Tarantino piece.

No subject is fuller of implications than the mundane world.

Eggleston is recognized as being one of the first photographers to establish the color photograph as a legitimate fine art medium. He has a unique ability to ability to find and reveal beauty in the most ordinary of scenes. Photos of seemingly mundane objects taken mostly in the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s have some striking displays of color, mostly due to a labour intensive dye-transfer printing process. The most compelling assumption in his photographs is that beauty can be found in the everyday. As one american writer wrote about Eggleston’s work, “The extraordinary, compelling, honest, beautiful and unsparing photographs all have to do with the quality of our lives in the ongoing world: they succeed in showing us the grain of the present, like the cross-section of a tree…. They focus on the mundane world. But no subject is fuller of implications than the mundane world.”

An Experiment.

I decided to try something new and shoot a short video piece yesterday inspired by a song by Radiohead that I really love. I was initially going to call this video ‘Experiments with Light’, or ‘The bad behavior of Light’. It’s a work in progress, shot and edited yesterday while on a day trip to Riebeek Kasteel with my ever patient girlfriend! I tried the film with a dozen different audio tracks before I came back to my original choice. I’ve also written a voice over for it talking about light. But maybe it’s better without the voice? I’m exposing a first rough draft.

Music: Radiohead – Hunting Bears.

A weekend in 35mm.

Over the family weekend in the Midlands, I decided to try shooting with 35mm Film. A friend lent me a camera he had inherited from his grandfather. A beautiful little piece. 1963 Olympus Pen F. I only took 2 spools with me and unfortunately one film (the main film!) came out blank. But thats the nature of Film. You never know what to expect. Practically, shooting with this camera is a nightmare. Besides the normal differences of film – having to actually load a new spool, wind it in, manually pull focus for each shot, etc – this camera has no light meter. Most film camera’s after 1965 come with a light meter so you can see your exposures through the viewfinder. But this camera was made before before all that. You have to carry a separate light meter with you and adjust the aperture and shutter speed to your reading each time you take off the lens cap. It’s also quite unique because it shoots half a frame – hence the two frames per image below. I’ve just uploaded the raw images I got back from the labs this morning. No editing has been done on these pics. I quite like the rawness of these results, which suits the personal subject matter really well.
