Amen
03rd June 2010, in Inspiration (4 Comments)
In Africa, Football is not a religion. But it is everything a religion should Be. These are Jessica’s words. Her AMEN project is a photographic journey through Africa which documents the symbols and rituals of Africa’s football fanaticism. The rites of passage to an open-aired Temple: The Pitch. A ceremony hidden like a cult secret amongst the weeds of a Mozambican jungle. The Totem-like goal posts on the sandy coast of Togo. The fingers held mid air trembling from the euphoric post-goal climax. The dreamy soft-blur from her 80mm on V-series Hasselblad of hands holding rag ball. An invocation of spiritual offering. The bright shirts, rusted trophies, frayed laces and kitsch picture-buckles. The flocking of followers dressed in Rich catholic football paraphernalia. A type of devotion that would make even the Vatican Jealous. Large themes explored through quiet and soft-spoken framing.
You can order Amen as a book from her website and her exhibition starts on the 15th of June till the 24th July at the Joao Ferrera gallery, 70 Loop Street.
