Ideas from the Studio

After returning from Beunos Aires, I was determined to dive into themes from my own country and heritage. Part of that goal is to try and be less afraid of working with bright African colors since I have a tendency to keep photographs very subdued and under-saturated. I had this simple idea in the back of my head for a few month and after meeting and working with the model, Patrica, on a Bree Street pilot shoot we did with Woolworths, I thought she would be great to help me work this.

I’m showing you a few photos from the test, but I have two that are my favourite.

South Africa through portraits.

You might have noticed a few tweets about Portrait of a Nation. It’s a new personal project that I’m doing. The aim of the project is to take portraits of the widest variety of South Africans from very diverse backgrounds. It’s a long term project and I hope to eventually have hundreds if not thousands of portraits of South Africans on the site. Perhaps in a year or two I will publish a book with a selection of the work.

It’s a tough decision to choose which one portrait eventually makes the site. Here is a selection of portraits I’ve shot so far.

Please take a look at the site, portraitofanation.co.za

Commissioned Prints for a new Cape Town Boutique Hotel.

Last week I was asked by Cascades to shoot Black and White images for 8 Prints in their new Sea Point Hotel. The brief was to shoot something very sensual within the boutique Hotel’s 8 rooms. Each room will hang a Print that was actually shot in that room. I was also asked not to use ‘skinny teenagers’ as models, but more models that the hotel guests could relate too. We decided on using a very simple theme of a Hotel guest getting prepared for her day. And also shots of her preparing or returning from a dinner party. We then just focused on small intimate moments we could capture out of that routine.

I used a combination of flash and reflected natural light to get some very hard punchy contrasts on some images mixed with some very soft naturally lighted elements on others. Here are some selected images from the shoot. We are still deciding on the final 8 prints.

Commissioned prints for a new hotel in Downtown Johannesburg.

In the beginning of this year I was commissioned to shoot Prints for a new hotel in Downtown Johannesburg. The photos are being used in over 120 locations throughout the hotel, printed at 4 meters by 3 meters. They were shot in very large format on a Hasselblad H2 with a Phaseone P45 Back. These are very large Prints, and seeing them on the web in a small size doesn’t truly do the work Justice. The brief was to document the history of how the discovery of Gold has shaped the Modern City. Here is a selection of work from the shoot.

It’s easy to shoot a Wine Estate with such a big story to tell.

After shooting 11 very beautiful estates for Cape Classics last year thought my wine-estate shooting days were complete, and it would be a while before I saw a vineyard through an eye piece again. But after a few visits (and tastings) at Backsberg Wine Estate I knew that this wasn’t true. As fourth generation farm, and South Africa’s first carbon neutral estate, the place is filled with a sense of character and purpose. It’s easy to create an interesting photo story with so many diverse elements to cover.

The Farm is situated just outside Franschhoek. You will fall in love with the place when you visit. For directions, see their website.

Backsberg are also very active on twitter, you can follow Simon Back or the official Backsberg Estate Tweets.

Shooting from the Hip.

Events are difficult to shoot. It’s not a controlled environment. You don’t know what to expect. The mood, the people, the lighting. It’s an art of shooting from the hip. And like any play of chance, high risk and often high reward.

Unlike the social pages featuring 50 snaps of middle-aged men hugging and holding beers, I like to interpret an event. I’m trying to capture the people, the interactions, the mood, the experiences, the details. A great event is fulled with photo opportunities.

There were a few nervous emails back and forth when I was first asked to shoot for Grolsch at the Design Indaba. “Are you sure you want me to shoot it in my style?” And I was relieved to hear that Grolsch love the results as much as I do.
