Why photographers wear black

Why photographers wear black

19th February 2010, in Blog (2 Comments)

Last week my client said I should dress more like ‘a Fashion Photographer’. “Like Tom Ford”, he said. I didn’t correct him. When he sees me, all he sees is black blur. “Has somebody died Andrew?”

Photographers have very strict style guides. Some say there’s a secret brand bible for photographer apparel. But it really all goes back to fashion codes. Codes are different from Stereotypes. Stereotypes are less specific. Black is a classic. As a non-color it exists outside of the fashion sphere and therefore outside of time. To cover yourself in Black is to be like a film in a camera. A negative surface absorbing the surrounding turmoil of moments. It’s very selective. It does not reflect, but compliments. To wear black is to capture the essence. German architects subscribe to the same theory. Have you ever seen an international architect drive past you in a black BMW 645 without wearing his thick black poloneck?

Wearing black also has the nice benefit that the photographer shows up less in reflections (windows particularly).
